And so it begins...

"I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants."  - A. Whitney Brown, former SNL news anchor

Take a moment in your hectic day and savor the flavor of these thought provoking questions...and don't forget to leave a response!

1. Do you have pets at home?  Do they have the same rights as the people who live with you?  What rights do your pets have?  In what ways are their rights limited? (For example, they may not be able to choose what or when to eat, when or how to get exercise, etc.)

2. Are there any rights that all animals should have?

3. If animals should have certain rights, do you think those rights also apply to animals we raise for food, like chicken and pigs? Are there any rights that farm animals should have? If so, what are they?

Have a grate (some cheese) weekend!

  1. I do have pets at home one cat and one dog. They have some of the same rights as we do in our house. They decide when they want to eat or go outside, but just like our parents do with us we limit the eating a bit to keep them healthy. Anytime I'm going out for a walk, run, or hike I always bring my dog along with me because she loves exercising so I try to do it with her as much as she likes. I think sometimes the rights of our animals do get limited for example when we are tired we skip the walk for the day even when the dog still wants to go and both the cat and dog don't have a say in what type of food they eat, (even though it doesn't look like they dislike what they eat), there still isn't options. I think that sometimes people need to stop and realize, myself included, that these our our pets and they are our responsibility. We can't just ignore them when we don't feel like doing things that are good for them and even for ourselves.

  2. I have pets at home, three dogs. (Hudson, Ranger, and Misty:)) They do have their owns rights, but not exactly the same as ours. They have the right to go inside and outside as they please and to have as much water as they want. We have the right to sit on the couch and sleep in beds however, the dogs don't always have the right to be on them. They also cannot choose how often they eat or what kind of dog food they are fed. I feel that animals should have the right to be taken care of and to be treated with respect. I believe that animals that are raised for food should also be treated with respect; many of them are raised in small pens that are too small for the number of animals that they hold and where disease spreads quickly. They should at least have the right to live in a place where they have room to walk and won't get sick as easily.

  3. I have two indoor cats and one outdoor dog. I feel as though they have the same rights as a child. We take care of them (feed, clean up, provide shelter, etc.) but they have the freedom to roam as they please. Other than choosing what they want to eat, they pretty much have the same rights as kids in my family. We allow our pets to go outside whenever they want, they sleep when and where they want, and we always have dry cat and dog food available so they can eat when they're hungry.Similarly, my sister can go outside to play, take a nap, or have a snack as she pleases with permission. As far as limits, I already mentioned they don't get to choose what they eat, but we give the cats wet catfood twice a day. We've tried different types and found which one doesn't make them sick and is affordable. We also give them treats when we eat our family supper. They are also confined to our property, granted we own a lot of land, but they are not to leave our property. All animals should have the right to live in a safe and healthy environment, either domestic or in nature. They should be allowed to have some sort of freedom. Second, they have the right to not be abused. Every living thing should have the right to be safe and treated with respect. Animals raised for food should have the same rights, but at the same time, we must realize animals are not our equal and we are higher on the food chain. When animals are rasied for food, they should not be mistreated, but they do not need to be waited on either. I think a general respect or courtesy is mandatory for animals in regard to living space, food, cleaniness, and disease. Farmers should strive to provide a healthy and affordable environment for their livestock.

  4. I do not have pets at my house due to the allergies of my family members. I still like animals and plan on having them when I am older. In response to question number two, I believe that all animals should have some rights but not all the rights of a human being. I believe that animals do deserve to have a comfortable living space with enough room to move around a little. I also believe that animals deserve to be fed, bathed, groomed, walked, and let out of its living space to roam around. These things are all responsibilities of the owner to take care of the animal. On the other hand, I do not believe that animals should be treated the same as humans in every aspect. Animals are instinctive creatures and some are even intelligent but they do not make moral decisions and therefore should not be granted all of the rights of a human being.

  5. I have a dog at home, Roxy. Roxy has some of the same rights that my family members and I have. These rights include the right to food, water and shelter. One right that Roxy is limited on is free roam. When we are home she is usually outside patrolling the lawn or lounging around. But when my brother and I are at school and my parents at work Roxy spends the work day in her kennel. It may not be her perfered location but it is the best for her safety. All animals should have the right to be treated with respect and have access to a safe and comfortable living space. Animals also deserve the right to be fed at specified meal times and to be bathed on a regular basis. These rights should apply to all farm, domestic and animals in captivity. Animals raised for food, deserve some extra rights. These animals need a higher level of respect. It seems that the meat indusrty puts the focus on output of product and crams animals together in small spaces which can spread disease. If time was put into the care and processing of theses animals food recals may lower.

  6. I have a dog and a cat at home they both have rights throughout our house such as the right to be left alone if they are sleeping and the right to sleep anywhere. However, these rights are slightly limited by my family's schedule. They do not have the right to be able to choose when to eat or what treats to have or what toys we pick out for them at the store. I believe that all animals should have the right to feel safe wherever they may be and the right to be able to trust the person who is looking after them so they do not have to fend for themselves. Since I believe that our pets should have certain rights it only makes sense that all animals have the same rights as the ones we live with in our homes. All animals should have the right to not live in fear in their surroundings. Even farm animals that may be used as food should havae the right to feel safe during the majority of their healthy lives. Also, I think farm animals should have the right to be given healthy food while they grow and mature. Overall, we must treat farm animals with an equal amount of respect as the pets that we welcome into our homes.

  7. I have three dogs at home; Jewel, Morgan and Kisses. Each of them have rights in our home such as being able to go both outside and inside of our house, sit on our couches and beds however there might be times when they are not allowed there (when company is over and such). The right to go outside is slightly limited to my family's work and activity schedule. They usually sleep inside at nights, and in the mornings let outside to run around and then fed. During the day while the family is working or learning, they are kept in their indoor/outdoor kennel, which is a pretty nice right if you ask me. They also do not get to choose the type of dog food they are fed either. Most of the time they are so excited to eat it most likely doesn't even faze them if they like it or not. They are fed twice a day, morning and night, so that could also be seen as a limit as well.
I believe all animals should have the right to be fed, bathed and love. I believe animal abuse is so cruel and inhumane, it disgusts me. Every animal should have the right to live in a safe and healthy environment where they feel loved every day, and are treated with respect.
Although some animals are being raised for food, I believe all animals should be treated with the same amount of respect, no matter their place on the food chain. If we limit and disrespect animals based on the food chain, we might as well do the same in society based on power and class. If we as humans don't do it, why be disrespectful and rude to the animals which provide us a healthy lifestyle? All in all, no matter what type of animal it may be, I believe each and everyone should be treated with respect, love and given acceptable limits.

  8. Yes i actually have a lot of pets at home. I have two dogs named Lexy and Camy. Four cats which are mainly outdoor cats, and a duck named skittles. My pets actually have some rights most pets wouldn't have like the dogs some time sleep with me in my bed or they are also able to roam free outside while not being chained up. The cats are given food and water and are able to go inside and outside whenever they like. And the duck also pretty much roams free except for at night when he goes into a giant shed where it also roams free in. So i do feel my pets are a little more spoiled then most, but they are still limited on some things they choose. Their rights are limited in a few ways also. We choose when the dogs eat to make sure they are staying healthy and not over eating. The dogs also have to get kenneled up when no one is home. One of the cats isn't allowed in the house at all he's just an outside cat.

I think that all animals should be taken care of if they are just a home animal or even a farm animal. By taken care of I mean being fed given water and a place to sleep. Those to me are their main rights because those are the ways we as people and animals need to survive.

Yeah i do believe those rights should apply to animals made for food. Even if they are used as food all living creatures have the right to food water and a place to sleep. If every animal is given that they should remain healthy and strong. It seems cruel to think it is okay to kill animals for food because most animals for food are no different then the ones you love at home. But in our culture not just today but since the cave man, animals have been killed for food. It is the mean of survival. Should a mouse have the right not to get eaten by a hawk? To me that does sound terrible but as long as they were not abused while being raised or neglected i believe they have had their rights.

  9. I have a dog at home named luke. He does have some rights in our home. He is fed daily and can have as much water as he likes. He is free to go out side whenever he wants to, just as long as he stays in the yard. He is free to swim whenever he likes ( The Mississippi is in our backyard) just as long as he is given a bath after, because if he doesn't get one he smells really bad. He gets to be in our house, but is allowed only in certain rooms. He is brushed and bathed weekly. We take him for walks and sometimes he gets to come with us when we go places in the car.

I think that animals should have rights. One of those rights is that they should be that they are properly cared for. They should be raised in proper environments that fits their needs. They also should be respected. I think that this should go for both household pets and farm animals, because even if farm animals are being raised for food, they are still living things that deserve respect and to be properly taken care of.

  10. I have 3 pets, Jake and Ella our two dogs and Martin our cat. My pets do have some rights, we let them outside when they want, they have free roam of our house and furniture. The rights they do not have are to roam freely outside, and this is mostly for there safty we do not want them to get hit by a car, taken or just get lost. We also don't necessarily let them do whatever they want such as dig holes in the yard, get into garbage and Ella's favorite past time- eating the vegetables out of our garden before we can enjoy them. We don't let them (or try not to let them) do these things because it makes a mess and could be harmful to them.

I think all animals have the right to be treated and fed well. Animals raised for food should be fed healthy things, treated as other animals on the farm would be and not be abused.

  11. I have 2 dogs, 4 cats, and a rabbit who are living at home, but are all outside animals. I guess they don't have the exact rights as the people who are living at home because they live outside, but they do have their own shelter, food and water dishes and entertainment (you could say). Rights that my dogs and cats do have are roaming our yard and many acerages of land that we own. My rabbit on the other hand has limited space in her hutch to be in, but she also a fenced area where she can dig and run as much as she pleases.

Probably, as mentioned above, all animals should have some sort of rights. Such as proper care of food, water, and shelter. Regardless if they're being raised for food or as a pet they should be treated humanley. Same goes for farm animals as well. They should have a proper balance among food, water, and land to roam for exercise.

  12. 1) I have one dog named Daisey. I believe that they do not at least mine does not. My dog does not have the same rights as the people who live on the house, the main one I can think of is that she can not leave whenever she would like. Daisey has the right to ask to go to the bath room outside and the right to sleep pretty much anywhere she would like.I believe there rights are very limited in almost everything they do.

    2) I believe they should have the right to good care from there owners, and treated with respect.

    3) Well I believe they should have the same rights until they are gathered for food so they have a sense of what a good long life could have been like. Like I said above they should be treated corrected and properly until they are harvested for food.

  13. I have one dog at home, Teton. She has the rights of food, water, love and a place to live. But does not have the same rights as the rest of our family because she is not allowed to roam the entire house, eat whenever she wants, or go outside whenever she wants. Teton is limited in some of her rights because if she were allowed to do whatever she wanted, it wouldn't be good for her, and its for her protection.

All animals have the right to eat and fend for themselves, but they are still animals and were not created to be on the same level as humans.

I think pets have different rights than farm animals, and farm animals have different rights than wild animals. If an animal is living in captivity, then it has the right to be fed and cared for within reason. If it lives in the wild, then it has the right to be left alone to fend for itself.

  14. I have one dog at home named Tucker. He has many rights at our home. He is allowed on all of the furniture in the house, we let him outside whenever he barks at the door (except if there are other animals in our yard or when he barks because he sees people walking on our street), he gets fed breakfast and dinner at the same time everyday and he gets treats if he is behaving, we are constantly putting fresh water in his bowl ( as he barks at the bathroom tub if he wants new water in his bowl), and he gets played with outside everyday. He doesn't completely have the same rights as my family because he obviously cannot talk and tell us everything that needs or wants, but we can usually figure out if he is trying to tell us something. We don't let him outside without his invisible fence collar because we don't want him to leave our yard and get hurt. It is for his own protection. We also don't give him treats whenever he barks at the pantry because we don't want him to become unhealthy and over weight.

I beleive that all animals deserve to be treated fairly. They need to have food, water, shelter, and they should be cared for. No animals deserve to be abused.

I beleive that animals that are raised for food deserve rights as well. They should eat healthy foods and get enough water. They should also have a safe and clean shelter to live in. They shouldn't be fed hormones even if it is more profitable for the farmer. They are animals too and they deserve to be treated well.

  15. I have five pets at home. Four dogs. Daisy, Gunny, Duchess, and Abby. And a cat named Norman. They are allowed in the house, can run around. They are allowed on the furniture only if they are clean. They can not choose when and where they eat, or how and when they exercise.

Animals should all be treated well. We, as people, should not mistreat them.

Animals raised for food are just that, food. They shouldn't be treated cruely, but they cant become pets either. I know all too well about raising animals for food. We raised our own cattle, chickens, turkeys, and guinea hens to eat. We treat them properly, but we don't baby them either. This is how farm animals raised for food should be treated. We don't use fertilizers or hormones on our animals. They are fed all organic food.

Animals should have a clean living enviornment, fresh water twice a day, at least, and food twice a day, at least.

  16. I have two pets back at home. I have two dogs, one is a Yorkshire and his name is Harley and my other dog is a Boxer and his name is Duke. The dogs have close to the same rights as the family, they are allowed to sleep anywhere as well as go on the couches and beds. But they get in trouble for chewing shoes or going to the bathroom in the house. My mom takes them on walks twice a day as well as brings them to the dog park too. They eat normal dog food, but they have treats and sometimes canned food as well. They are obviously limited because they don't have a say or an opinion as humans do. But in some ways they are able to pick what they want.

I feel that all animals should be treated with respect, and that should be their right, just because they aren't human doesn't mean they "aren't real." All animals should not starve of hunger or dehydration. They should also have proper shelter.

Animals that we eat should still be treated with respect, and should be fed very well and should even be organic food. Obviously they are not pets so they don't need the love and affection but they should still be treated with care.

  17. I have one pet at home. She's a little dog named Ruby. My whole family loves her a lot but she definitely does not have the same rights as us. She doesn't get to decide what she eats, she doesn't get to sleep in a nice bed like us, etc. We do ,however, give her "people food" as a treat now and then, we let her sit with us on the couches, and we take her for walks and let her play outside. So I think she's a happy dog, but she doesn't get quite the luxury that we do.

I think all animals definitely deserve respect. Animals should never be abused or mistreated. They are very innocent and they don't deserve any of that.

I think that animals that are raised to be eaten still deserve respect by humans. They still need to be cared for by being provided with food, shelter, and clean and safe environment to live in.

  18. Yes, I do have a pet at home. My family has a 2 1/2 year old dog named Josie. I would not say her rights are the same as my family's(food, exercise, etc). However, her best interest is always taken into consideration: we purchase specific food to keep her on a healthy diet, she is given proper veterinarian care, and is given plenty of attention. We decide her eating schedule and her boundaries within the house, but she has freedoms; free reign of the yard without a leash, occassionally she is allowed on furniture to sit with us despite her size (50 lbs.), and she is given "Table scraps/people food" every so often. I would definitely agree that she does not have the same freedoms/liberties as my family and I, BUT I know she is one happy pup! :)

I feel that every animal, domestic and those being raised for market, should have the right of everyday well-being (proper attention, food & water, veterinarian care, etc.)I believe that ALL animals should be viewed and treated not as factory products but as living beings. I do agree with animals being raised for market, however, they should be treated with the rights listed above until they have reached the maturity level needed for market.

  19. I have a horse and he is pretty much like a family member. I feed him everyday and exercise him and I don't like going out of town unless I have someone to take care of him. He has as many rights as a human for the most part, although there are limits, for example sometimes I go and ride at like 5 in the morning weather he wants to or not and he is kind of forced to exercise because it's good for him. He is however fairly spoiled and I even go out there when it's 20 below to go take care of him and put a blanket on him. As far as animals raised for meat, I don't think that's right period. I am a vegitarian and I understand that a long time ago peple had to hunt for their food, but now animals are being born just to get killed and eaten and I think that's wrong. I try to think from their point of view. They have no choice, they are innocent and yet they are treated horribly until they get killed and eaten. How would you like to live knowing that your only purpose is to die? I know I wouldn't, and granted they probably don't know that and don't think that way, but the farmer's don't even try to let them live happy lives. Sometimes they'll shove as many chickens in a cage as they can fit until their ready to kill them, and cows...many times are EXTREMELY abused before being killed. I believe every animal should have rights, and I absolutely hate slaughter houses and puppy mills and anything of that sort. I personally don't eat meat and i think the world would be better if no body did, but obviously that'snot realistic, but people could at least reduce their consumtion considerably (especially americans.) It would also help if people only bought local meat from free range farmers.

  20. Yes, I have a pet. I have a dog. It is a boy. He is a maltese. His name is Dex! No he does not have the same rights as us because his schedule is based upon ours. Dex has the right to choose what he eats in a way. My family puts out hard and soft dog food for him to choose what he wants to eat. Dex's rights are limited for example, when we are gone all day he is unable to be let out to go to the bathroom.
I believe all animals should have the right to always have food and shelter along with being able to go outside and exercise/socialize with other animals.
Yes I believe the rights should apply to animals we raise for food because like Alison said many times those animals are badly abused!
I think it is okay to raise them for food however when they are alive they should not be abused!

  21. I have three dogs, one indoor cat, and a bunch of outdoor cats. The dogs' names are Maggie, Amy, and Bruce. They don't get the same treatment as a human, but they do get treated very well as a pet. All of the dogs are loose all day(No Chains/Ropes/Kennels) since my home is out in the country. So the dogs can do as they please during the day. Maggie, our smaller dog has to come in during the night, while the other two(Black Labs) are able to stay in our barn and sleep on an old mattress. Sometimes my dog Amy will come in the house and sleep in my room. The only bad thing about that is she takes up as much room as she can and she snores all night. Other than that, the dogs are welcomed in our in house during the day and to food scraps with my mom isn't looking.

I think the basic rights for humans and domesticated animales are as follows: shelter, food, water, and proper medical attention. I live on a farm, so I have personally seen the interaction of humans and animales. Farm animales are not like wild animales, since wild animales are free and have a chance to take care of themselves.

And the cats are a diifferent story.

  22. I have on dog in my house. He is useless and we do not get a long. That being said i treat him with the respect I think an animal deserves. I don't knock him around or starve him when I get angry about him peeing on the floor. As for his rights, he leads a very good life. He comes and goes as he pleases, he has his very own spot on the couch(which he occupies 12 hours a day), and he gets to share a room with my younger brother.

I feel like it is very hard to apply rights to all animals simply because there is an inherent food chain that we follow. Saying that all chickens should be given the ability to pursue happiness is unrealistic because in a nation the size of hours we must take certain measures to put food on tables. My personal opinion is to be self-righteous. I don't like to support industries that mistreat animals and provide unhealthy food for cheap prices so I choose alternatives. I feel like you just do what you can when and where you can.

Animals raised for food should be protected by strict animal cruelty laws but once again the mass production of chicken and such is, at the moment, a sad reality that is in need of change. We need to continue producing food to feed our growing nation but we need to develop a better process.
