As presented in class today, corn is a popular ingredient in most every food item we eat today. Julie and I challenge you to try and go ONE day without eating foods that contain CORN. If you get frustrated and give in...so what! At least you tried! Here is a list of some foods that you can bite into for this succulent experiment:
- fruits (fresh)
- vegetables (fresh)
- bread (artisan)
- H20 (from the tap...no "juicy drinks")
- rice (not from a box)
- legumes

Corn is in everything!! It was really hard to find something to eat that didn't have it. I had water instead of milk at breakfast and an apple instead of a bagel. I'm all for fruits and vegetables and everything, but it really just doesn't cut it for me. I just had to have my bagel with peanut butter and a big glass of milk. Yum! And so, I gave in! But I did find it interesting that corn is in so many things, I've never really realized it or thought about it before.
ReplyDeleteYEAH for the first to attempt the challenge! I'm so happy that you're becoming more aware of the food industry's dependence on a bumper crop like corn!
ReplyDeleteMy day without corn products went well. I managed to eat two meals with these strict guidelines. Breakfast consisted of Quaker oatmeal with walnuts and a banana on the side. I had to stop myself at first because I usually make oatmeal with milk. Instead I used water. It was a satisfying breakfast and exactly something I would usually eat except I made it with water instead of milk. For a morning snack I had some trail mix containing raisins, peanuts, almonds and cashews. My lunch meal consisted of rice, red potatoes and mixed greens with a vinaigrette dressing. It was very filling and I plan to eat like that again. Unfortunately I did not make it the whole day; I went home for the weekend and ate the meal my mom made. The thing I found challenging was not drinking milk because I usually drink milk with every meal. I think it is ridiculous how many food items have corn products in them that do not need them. Society needs to focus on healthy eating and eliminate extra ingredients in food to lessen the increasing obesity epidemic in the U.S. Also the fact that animals are being fed corn because it is cheap is harming them. The meat industry is so focused on mass production that quality is lost. I work in a grocery store and see how much food is wasted and think something needs to be done.
ReplyDeleteI woke up this morning with full intentions of beating this challenge of not eating anything with corn in it. I skipped breakfast because I was going to church and didn't wake up in time to eat an hour before. This made it seem a little easier. I planned on eating a salad with veggies and black beans on it for lunch with an apple on the side but when I went down to Greenview after church all of the amazing breakfast foods tempted me to give up. I have to admit that I did give up and I had a yogurt parfait, a muffin, and an french toast sticks with syrup. This assignment was harder then I thought it would be. I figured I would have no problem eating veggies, fruit,a good salad, and drinking water because I like all of these foods and include them in my regular meals but cutting everything else out proved to be the challenge. I didn't realize how many types of food had corn products in them. As I looked through my drawer of food I only found a few things without these products. This experiment was very interesting and I still learned a lot even though I failed right away. It made me realize how I don't know much of anything about the foods that I choose to eat everyday. I hope through this class, I will be able to realize what is in the food I am eating and have alternatives that work for me to avoid certain foods.
ReplyDeleteI'm so proud of you guys for attempting what seems to be impossible!!
ReplyDeleteWell, I had intentions on going a full day with out corn, but I just decided to eat one meal or snack a day this past weekend with out it. It was pretty difficult at first, but i just stuck to fruits and vegetables for snacks. I really enjoyed this challenge because I felt healthier and I felt like I had a lot more energy and focus throughout the day. As I was grocery shopping this weekend it was crazy how many items at the store that you would never think would have corn in it. I enjoyed this challenge, but it definatley could become an expensive lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteI did this challenge was a lot harder then I thought. I started the day of just drinking water and eating fruit, but I was not enough to fill me. After being hungry and sort of suffering I decided to eat some nuts. That made me feel a little better. Then I wanted to eat some cheez-its but guess what I couldn't. So the rest of the day I just ate fruit and vegetables and kinda suffered. I did feel better I mean healthier.

During my day without corn experience I found that it was a very big challenge trying to find foods that were available to me and plentiful. I had practice at 6:00 in the morning and usually I have a granola bar as a pre-snack workout however, this morning that was not an option. I continued to practice and weight lifting afterwards and went to the cafeteria. Of course they have all my favorites that contain corn and I was stuck eating an apple and some veggies, lacking protien that I should get after a hard workout. I continued to attempt the challenge but when it came time for lunch I needed a quick snack and did not have many options so I had to settle for a granola bar. My challenge lasted me a solid 10 hours, I did not think it would be that hard to stay away from corn products. It is pretty scary that I might think that I know what is in the food I am eating but I really don't. This challenge was a good experience but I think if I really wanted to stay away from corn or if I was allergic to it, it would be expensive and very difficult.
ReplyDeleteGood point about the allergy factor Brenna! Can you imagine what kind of measures you'd have to take to avoid corn on a daily basis?!!
ReplyDeleteEach morning this past weekend and week I have woken up with full intentions to not eat anything containing corn, and boy was it difficult. One particular morning, Monday, I decided to just go for it. My usual routine morning routine is to eat a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios cereal, and because I have no fresh fruit in my dorm I had to skip breakfast that day and drink some water. During break between one of my classes, I ate a cup of fruit from Storm's Den, but I was far from feeling satisfied. Dinner is where I had to crack, I couldn't take it anymore, and I needed to eat substantial food to feel satisfied! I felt pretty healthy during the day when I ate my cup of fruit, but I know that is not nearly enough calories and nutrients to have a healthy lifestyle that way. I would for sure like to give this "no corn all day deal" another try however!
ReplyDeleteThis has really opened my eyes. I didn't realize that corn is in practically everything. I made it through breakfast eating oatmeal and drinking water. That wasn't bad. I normally eat oatmeal for breakfast anyways. Due to my class times today I didnt have time to go get anything for lunch. I was starving, so I had to quick grab a granola bar from my room when I was switching my text books. Having a busy shedule makes it really hard to avoid food without corn in it. Also not being able to keep fresh fruits and vegetables in my room because of how expensive they are.
ReplyDeleteToday I woke up planning and determined to go one day without corn products. I went to my first class at 8:00 so skipping breakfast wasn't hard. Then I had an orange when I got back from class and I felt pretty good like hey, maybe I can do this. Then I went to lunch and make a really good salad and made sure that there was no corn products in any of the toppings, only veggies vinagrette dressing and lettuce. By the time dinner came around I was so hungry and I felt very limited on my choices at the GDR. I was going to have another salad but I just felt it wouldn't do enough for me so I ended up caving. I am still bummed out that I did but it was a good experience and very eye opening to really start to understand how much corn is used. I would like to actually try and succeed at this challenge, maybe I will again when I can get to a few more options of food. It's a challenge but one that we could do, especially if I was able to prepare the listed food in different ways.
ReplyDeleteSo I did the challenge today. I guess the only way I could do this was to plan out exactly what I could eat for each meal. I ate an apple for breakfast (my usual) and drank water. I continued to eat trail mix without the M & M's for lunch with more water. For supper, I ate a large salad with carrots, brocoli, sunflower seeds, and balsamic vinegar with water and a banana for dessert. I do not feel unsatisfied, but it was very hard to sit in the GDR and watch people eat egg rolls, hot dogs, and dessert. Dessert is my weakness, so I missed that a lot! Overall, I feel healthy for eating what I did eat today. I feel better, physically, and I guess I could accept not eating some of these foods. However, I like breads, baked goods, and meat fed off of corn too much. It would be very difficult to maintain this diet for any period of time. I'm already looking forward to tommorrow when I can eat what I want!
ReplyDeleteToday i did the corn challenge, and it was hard to do. I didn't have breakfast today but for lunch i ate a salad with vinaigrette which was actually pretty good. I also had a banana along with water. For dinner i had rice with beans, which was ok, I also had a salad to go along with it the same one that i had for lunch. I really wanted ice cream so in the end i ended up caving in i don't know if the cows that produced the milk/ cream in the ice cream were fed corn...i am going to assume that they were. So in the end i ended up only going full meal without any corn products. It really opened my eyes to how much of our food have some type of corn product in it. It was defiantly a challenge!
ReplyDeleteGoing without corn is a challenge to say the least! So many things you wouldn't think would have corn in them do! Some of my family is corn, soy, and gluten-free, so I have had practice only eating fresh produce. I did the corn challenge and while its hard not to eat the things you really like and normally eat, it can be done. I had oatmeal with fruit for breakfast, a salad for lunch, and a salad with chick peas, rice, balsamic dressing, and tomatoes for dinner. For my before-practice snack I had a cherry pie Larabar. Larabars are amazing "granola" bars that only have a few, all natural ingredients. For example, my cherry pie one only has cherries, dates, and almonds! Eating like this is refreshing, but I still enjoying being able to eat meat. I look forward to continuing to incorporate what I found into my other meals, but I will also look forward to being able to eat the things I normally eat.
ReplyDeleteWhen we talked about avoiding corn products for a day in class I never knew how hard it would be. Today I attempted the challenge. For breakfast I didn't know what was "off limits" so I just grabbed a banana quick. Lunch I did my best, but I failed. I avoided meat and products I would normally eat and went to the salad bar instead! The dressing became an issue so I just used less ranch than normal. By dinner time I was absolutly starving and I caved. I was not able to cut corn completely out of my diet, but I did limit it. Living in a dorm makes it a little difficult to keep fresh fruits and to cook your own meals. Just attempting this challenge really made me realize how often we consume corn!
ReplyDeleteThe first thing when I woke up I grabbed a banana and went to go work out. When I got back I starting eating a power bar and completely forgot about about Corn products. When your use to eating the same foods all the time you don't stop to hesitate to think,"does this have corn". I really don't think I could make it through a day with out corn, being an athlete I constantly need energy. And don't have time to think about if my food has corn in it.
ReplyDeleteThis past week I have been avoiding the challenge! Corn is in pretty much everything and anything you can think of! Yesterday I finally made myself. When I woke up for breakfast I ate an orange and had a glass of water. when lunch came around I was starving! I really wanted to make a pizza before work however I couldn't! So I ate oatmeal. As a snack for work I brought some broccoli and strawberries. I couldn't believe how hard it was to go without corn. I thought I would be able to go the whole day, however; my mom and brother stopped to see me at work and brought me Chinese and I could not pass it up!
ReplyDeleteAfter looking through all the food in my dorm the only thing I came upon which I believe has no corn in it is oatmeal. I would love to go a whole day with out corn but with my options it just isn't possible. I did find it very interesting looking through all the food and thinking about what might have corn in it.
ReplyDeleteI did my day without corn yesterday and I didn't find it too hard. A lot of things we couldn't eat are things I don't eat anyways like meat or eggs. The hardest part was breakfast I think because I usually have a bowl of cereal and milk and I was about to have cheerios but then read the label and they have modified corn startch. I ended up eating a banana and found some bread that had no corn or eggs in it and made toast. I put peanut butter on it because when I read the label I could not find anything that I thought might contain corn, I might be wrong though. I also had black coffee. Then I kind of skipped luch because I was in a hurry but I did eat a small apple as a snack later. Then for dinner I just had rice and vegetables and water. For the rest of the night I just kind of kept myself busy to stop from thinking about food because usually Iat the most junky stuff late at night while i'm doing homework or something. I don't feel really much different, but I was kind of a cool challange and I think the hardest part is first of all, remembering that you should check the label and also when your in a hurry it's easier to grad like crackers or a granola bar.
ReplyDeleteI have gone the whole day without eating corn until now I went to storms to get a salad so i thought i was doing good i even looked at the label for ceasers salad dressing which of course had corn in it. It is so amazing how much food does have corn. It is definitely show how much we rely on those kind of foods when we are in a hurry. All of my quick snack food has corn in it and I haven't had time to eat lunch or dinner today either. But it shows how much we rely on a food as simple as corn. I did discover that peanut butter doesn't have corn though.
