Happy Monday to you all!
We'd like to hear your thoughts on a few of the themes that were presented in the first few sections of the "Meaning of Food" PBS video series.
What would you choose to be your last meal? Why?
What have you discovered on the Meaning of Food website?
See you Thursday!
The movie "Meaning of Food" is very interesting how food can be looked at in so many different ways. After seeing the chapter about that last meal it got me thinking. What would I want my last meal to be? And I knew exactly what a wanted SWEETS anything that is really unhealthy for me, because I wouldn't have to worry about it affecting my body. I would want foods like cookie dough, Oreos and milk, a cake that is full of frosting, chocolate chip blizzard, Kit-Kats bars, French onion chips and other yummy treats. Along with that a simple cup of bananas and strawberries. I would only want small portions of each of these foods. Just so I can take little bites. Along with these treats I would want a little bowl of my mom’s macaroni and mushrooms, for the memory. That would be considered my perfect last meal.
ReplyDeleteWhile I was browsing through the meaning of food website there was a few parts that caught my eye and were interesting to look at. I really liked reading about what kinds of food some of the cooking celebrities enjoyed as comfort foods. It was fun knowing that everyone in the world has those little cravings when they need to relax and remember good memories from food. Another cool thing I found on the website was in the food and family section. It was a mini quiz on bringing in the new or bringing home a new baby. It had a lot of really cool facts in it, one example being "Red eggs are incorporated into the naming and welcome ceremony when the baby is one month old in what country?" That country is China. There is a lot more to explore on the meaning of Food website but those to areas were the ones that caught my eye the most.
While watching the PBS video it was interesting that they discussed issues with many points of views and cultures. It was nice to see all of the variety.
ReplyDeleteFor my last meal I would really savor Thanksgiving dinner. It has all of the food that I really love, but of course I would add and modify some things. The basic meal would have potatoes, stuffing, turkey, ham, gravy, green bean casserole, my grandma's rubard pie & buns. This foods would be very comforting in a time like that and I hope to never be in that situation!
The information on the website is very helpful and very user friendly. They have specific tabs for certain information and within that is a variety of options for you to look at. Along with the receipes and videos there are helpful tips to assist in your cooking.
When I try to think about what I think my last meal would be, I find it to be very difficult. First I think about my all time favorite unhealthy food item: the blooming onion from Outback Steakhouse. However, considering the nutritional value of some of the jail food that they serve I also might prefer to have ample amounts of my favorite fruits and vegetables. Watermelon, apples, grapes and bell peppers with hummus all sound delicious as well. I think my final decision would be a combination of the two; the blooming onion with fruits and veggies on the side.
ReplyDeleteOn the meaning of food website I have found several links helping to educate people on the Jewish practice of keeping Kosher. I do not know much about it so it is good to learn more about this topic, this is a helpful tool for people to get to know other culture's food practices. There are also several links for viewers to look into food and its connection to families, nourishment to their bodies, and cultures. Overall, I consider it a great website to educate myself on the further meanings of food and people.
I enjoyed watching the different ways the movie looked at food in cultures. The wedding was entertaining to see the customs and practices of other cultures. I also found the last meal on earth section to be very interesting. The man who cooked the meals had so much passion and displayed selflessness for his job. I would have a hard time choosing a last meal on earth. My favorite unhealthy foods include pasta from Olive Garden, Sam's club cake (marble with white buttercream frosting), cold stone ice cream, and french fries. I would choose all of these foods for my last meal and maybe add a saled from Olive Garden to add a healthy touch. Eating these foods with no guilt would be amazing but being able to pick my last meal knowing I was going to die would be a different story. The website shares valuable information about food and culture, food and family, and food and life. I enjoyed reading about food the at is "weird" to some cultures but normal in others. Cheese was given as an example. I would never think of cheese as "weird" but people in China might. Also, the quiz on foods from different cultures was interesting because each of us is born into a different culture, family, and society and the food we eat varies greatly. I found the way the website is set up to be very user-friendly and easy to navigate. The statements under each heading were short but to the point. I liked what this website had to offer.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely want a junk basket with plenty of ketchup and ranch! That would include french fries, potato wedges, mini tacos, pizza rolls, onion rings, and chicken strips. I would also want some combination of chocolate, peanut butter, carmel, fudge, brownie, and vanilla ice cream accompanied with a baked good made of the same ingredients. I would also like some sort of a spicy, shrimp, marinara pasta. I would drink a cherry coke with this meal. I want these peculiar foods because they consist of a large combination of foods. I want the fried foods because I do not get to eat those regularly and the junk basket with those items reminds me of a small diner in my hometown that my family used to go to. The diner is also the reasoning for the cherry coke- I always have cherry coke when I go to that diner. As for the pasta, once I had an excellent serving of spicy shrimp pasta and I vividly remember the experience including who I was with, where we were, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe Meaning of Food is very interesting so far. I enjoy the specific stories presented in the movie. I am yet trying to find the connection among all the stories, but the stories are intriguing nonetheless. On the website, I flipped through some of the foods from other countries and wow, what other cultures eat is extraordinary. For example, the fertilized egg that is incubated until a chick develops and slightly boiled before eaten. This is called balut. When I read the description of balut, I was shocked and disgusted. I know I need to have respect for other cultures but balut definitely is not for me! I am excited to see all of the different stories presented in the rest of The Meaning of Food!
I couldn't choose just one thing for my last meal, I have many different types of favorite foods and I'd want a little bit of everything. First things first, I've got to have spaghetti noodles (with sauce on the side). It's my favorite thing to eat and I always have it at least once a week. To go with my spaghetti, I would like a breadstick or two, or three, etc. from Olive Garden. I would also want to have some of the ham my grandfather makes during Christmas; it is the best ham you will ever eat in your life. He always gives a little extra to me because he knows how much I love it. To drink, I'd either want a diet coke or an iced tea, something sweet of course; it's not the healthiest meal obviously, but it is so good! Maybe even a cheeseburger from Five Guys. I don't think I'd be able to eat it all, but it sounds perfect to me!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was looking on the meaning of food website, I clicked on food and family and I noticed a little article about what people feed their dogs. I have three dogs at home and I love dogs, so out of interest, I decided to read that one. It talked about how there are truffles and fudge especially for dogs. I think it's neat how much people care about their dogs and want to treat them to food that is extra special! I've made special doggie cookies for my dogs at home and they loved them. It's fun to do something special for them, they're part of the family too, after all! :)
After watching the Meaning of Food and watching the huge Italian meal that was being prepared for the wedding, I got to thinking about what I would want to eat for my last meal. Some would think steak and potatoes would be satisfying for them, but not for me. When I think of food that will satisfy me for my last meal, I immediately think of my grandma's monkey bread. Whenever we go and visit her, she always makes her specialty at least one morning for breakfast for us. Sometimes, if she says we're good, she will make us monkey bread for a midnight snack with her.
ReplyDeleteThe information on The Meaning of Food website is very helpful and user friendly. They have specific easy to read tabs for certain information. With the recipes and videos provided there are helpful tips to assist in your cooking, which is helpful for someone like me who has no idea how to cook really but is very eager to learn!
It’s an interesting topic to think about what you would want your last meal to be. I’ve never really thought about it until seeing the PBS movie clip. I know exactly what I would want to eat as my last meal. It’s kind of hard to decide because I enjoy so many different kinds of food, but the perfect last meal for me would be a grilled medium rare steak, with grilled shrimp, garlic mashed potatoes, and grilled zucchini. I would also want my mom’s famous raspberry pretzel dessert with a huge scoop of whipped cream afterwards. That would be the perfect last meal for me because I love eating this meal in summer so it would bring back great memories of grilling at my house and enjoying time with my family and friends.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed exploring the Meaning of Food website. I first explored the Food and Life comfort foods. I enjoyed reading about other people’s comfort foods and I thought it was great that they included recipes. It was interesting to see the variety of the different comfort foods and it was interesting reading about different chefs or authors favorite foods. A lot of them sound delicious! My favorite was Marcus Samuelsson’s Swedish meat balls. I would love to try those and it would be interesting to because I am part Swedish. I also looked at the food and family part of the website. I didn’t realize how much food is centered on the welcoming of a new baby. I think it is fascinating how there can be so many different traditions for bringing new babies into the world. I obviously didn’t know much because I only got 3 out of 10 on the quiz. I also clicked on the food and culture section of the website and I thought it was cool how they had really unusual foods that certain cultures eat. The one that was least appealing to me was Hu-Hu Grubs. It is a New Zealand native; the larvae of the Huhu beetle can be found in rotting logs and eaten raw or cooked. It is described as tasting nutty or like chicken. I don’t know if I would be able to eat that but I would like to try haggis which is a dish native to Scotland.
For my last meal I would choose to have steak, cooked perfectly medium rare and shrimp. I would also like to have homemade green bean casserole. Steak always reminds me of beautiful Saturdays in the summer that I would spend with my family, and green bean casserole has always been one of my favorite side dishes. I recently was on the website in accordance to The Meaning of Food and read about food and culture. I read about the practice of eating kosher foods. This was very interesting because it is so different than the way that I eat. I also read about the many different “delicacies” around the world…such as fertilized duck eggs, blow fish and bugs!
ReplyDeleteI have so many different favorite foods that it is difficult for me to choose only one last meal. I love home-style meals for example, thanksgiving. The food my family eats on thanksgiving is food that I have grown up eating: turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, stuffing and lefsa. One more thing that I would add is Cheerios with a little sugar sprinkled on top. This is something that I used to eat at my daycare for breakfast all the time. I cherish the taste of cheerios because it brings me back to my childhood.
ReplyDeleteA few things that I have noticed on the PBS website are things about Kosher foods and what Kosher is all about. There is a lot of information on the site about other cultures food! So far, the movie has been very entertaining. I enjoyed hearing what peoples last meals was. It really makes you realize that even people in prison that are on death row have feelings and certain foods can bring them back. The film makes you realize how foods can make you feel and how important they are.
I found the "Meaning of Food" videos that we watched in class were very interesting, and if I were to pick my last meal, I would want either my mom's stuffed pork chops, but instead of being stuffed, the stuffing is put on top, or my dad's goulash. There's something about good 'ole home cooking that comforts me. I would want that as my last meal.
ReplyDeleteThese short videos we have watched show how there is a lot of diversity in the way that we eat. We all have particular meals or dishes that we like, and that is key to our culture. With how important food is to all cultures, it's a wonder why we have so many fast food joints around. We all enjoy our food, so why not take the time to make exactly what we want to eat? This question is based on one word; time. With how busy all our lives are, it's really quite amazing that any of us even have time to be in the kitchen cooking. If there were more hours in the day, I think there would be a lot fewer fast food joints around.
The "Meaning of Food" has been very interesting so far and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of it. I think my last meal would consist of my mom's homemade bread, her applesauce jello, her squash bake, my grandpa's grilled ham, and my grandma's Milky Way cake. These things bring back memories of birthdays, family gatherings, and holidays that were joyous celebrations of our time together.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I found interesting on the website was the section entitled "Heirloom Foods." It is really interesting to think about all the foods we now have in our diets because they have been passed down from generation to generation. The food I found the most interesting out of the ones shown, was the Five Color Silverbeet Chard. Chard is an fascinating food that can be found in so many different colors. The vivid colors of this plant really drew me to it. Just think, a salad, slightly cooked, or a garnish, these leafy greens would add color to any meal and look great doing it.
I thought watching The PBS the “Meaning of Food” was very interesting. I really gave me a look at how other cultures and religious group’s respect and honor food. It was nice to see what other cultures make on special occasions and not so special.
ReplyDeleteIf I had only one meal left on this earth I would have a large medium done steak, with garlic mashed potatoes, vegetables, with raspberry lemonade with raspberry cheesecake for dessert. Each one of these foods really hits home to me. Growing steak was my favorite food and when I was old enough to get steaks at restaurants I would always get garlic potatoes and vegetables and my dad would always tease me and ask if I would eat it all. The main course meal has been my favorite for years and regarding the raspberry lemonade and raspberry cheesecake I just really like raspberries. I think this is one of the best last meals this world has to offer.
The Meaning of Foods website is a very helpful and user friendly site that really helps people interested in food really find what they want from food in life to food in culture. Also they have a great selection of recipes that could be seen in videos or written form.
I found watching some of the clips from "The Meaning of Food" very interesting. I really enjoyed watching the Italian wedding, I can't believe that the father made all of that food. It very good.
ReplyDeleteI would have to pick a variety of food for my meal because I really don't have one favorite meal, I have many. So I would probably would want my mom's mashed potatoes or my dads grilled salmon, My mom's her homemade Caesar salad that she makes every summer and a small bowl of my uncles shrimp gumbo over rice. For dessert I would want a slice of my aunt's chocolate silk pie or my dads banana foster dessert. To drink I would want a raspberry and blueberry smoothie. I think I would want my moms mashed potatoes because they are something that I have always loved since I was a kid. I would want my dad's salmon because I really like salmon a lot and he only usually makes it only on special occasions. I would want some of my uncles shrimp gumbo because it aways brings back good memories of when my family goes out east to New Jersey every couple of years. Plus I love food that is really hot, and he can make his gumbo super hot. I would want my mom's homemade Caesar salad, because I have always loved Caesar salads, and I have never tasted anyones Caesar dressing that taste as good as my moms because she always adds extra lemon to it, because I love when it is really lemony. I would want my aunt chocolate silk pie because it is my most favorite kind of pie, and because it reminds me of Christmas, because that is the only time we get to have it. I would want to have my dad banana foster dessert because the first time I ever had it was when I was in Mexico with my family.I would want a berry smoothie because it is something that always order whenever I go out to eat with friends or family, if they have it.
The Meaning of Foods website is very easy to use. I really like the recipes and all of the information they have on it. I thought that Gonnna Eat that segment on the website was very interesting.
I thought that the sections of The Meaning of Food that we watched were really entertaining and it was fascinating to see how different cultures create and enjoy different foods and how much of an art form food can be. It was a different way to look at food and I liked the new perspective.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose a last meal, it would probably be spaghetti because it's my favorite food and it has been since I was about 5 years old. It reminds me of home and my family, which would be comforting if I was about to die. I would also probably eat something like chocolate or cake because I have a huge sweet tooth. I would also want something American like a hamburger or a hotdog,a big glass of skim milk, and a strawberry smoothie.
My favorite part of The Meaning of Food website was all of the recipes they have, because I absolutely love to cook and it's super fun to cook new things that I've never tried to cook before. The website also had a lot of good information about all aspects of food on it and some of the stuff was really interesting.
I really enjoyed watching the movie "The meaning of Food." I thought the stories were very captivating and some what emotional. It is crazy to think how much food can effect and be apart of someones life and even culture. I never really thought food had so much impact of people's life.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to die tomorrow my last meal would be a quite large one. I would have spicy chicken wings because I have loves them since I was little. Cherry coke, because it is my favorite pop. Potato ole's from Taco Johns ( with spicy cheese), and a chiptole burrito with guacamole on the side! These are probably all my favorite foods put together! yummmm :)
I thought the PBS wesite was really cool. One of my favorite things that I saw on there was the section about Obento. Obento is a creative and artistic lunch that Japanese mothers make and pack for their Preschoolers to bring to school. I think we talked a little bit about this in class because I remember hearing about it and looking at pictures before. I think it's so amazing the things that they can create out of food. I wish we did something like that here in America.
ReplyDeleteI've really been enjoying "The Meaning of Food" video that we've been watching in class. Last week I was into it the whole time. The part about the guy who prepared the last meal for people about to die in prison was so intense and extremely interesting. It really fascinated me to see the things that people would request as their last meal. For my last meal I would probably go all out in junk food. I would definitely want fried chicken because I love it so much! I think I would also like pretty much everything for the Q Mandarin Buffet. It's a Chinese buffet in Cambridge that me and my friends and sometimes my family go to a lot back home. I love their coconut shrimp, peanut butter chicken, teriyaki chicken, noodles, sugar doughnuts, and pretty much everything else too. It's my last meal. Why not pig out!
Well, I just had the opportunity to view "Meaning of Food" (the parts I missed anyways do to my week of absence.) I have really enjoyed the movie thus far! As others have mentioned it has held my interest from start to finish...it was actually quite difficult to stop where the class had left off...I just wanted to keep going and soak more and more in! I can't wait until we continue to see the rest in class!
ReplyDeleteAs far as the website, I have not yet had an opportunity to browse through with the business of making up class work and mid-term week. However, I definitely plan on setting time aside over break to check it out! If the movie intrigued me as much as it did, I'm sure the website and its features will grab my attention also!
The man who made the last meals for inmates on death row--God Bless him! What a difficult job and burden to live up to, to do all that one can to make the last food experience pleasant for those in such depressing circumstances!! If placed in such a situation my last meal would include:
~My Dad's lasagna (It'd be best if he made it, but if not I'd settle for just his recipe!)
~Caesar Salad...with white AND rye crutons!
~Endless supply of fresh fruit kabobs (cantalope, FRESH PINEAPPLE!!!, watermelon, red AND green grapes, and strawberries)
~Also my Mom's Strawberry Cinnamon Applesauce jello...YUM
~Dessert would be a 2 scoop Chocolate custard sundae with marshmallow creme sauce and Heath bar pieces...FROM CULVER'S!
Oh boy, I better stop there...my mouth is just watering tooooooo much already!
I really liked the different segments we watched in class! It was creative and very interesting. The italian feast looked delicious, and i should have gotten food to eat before i came to class because throughout that whole movie my stomach was rumbling! I know that if my dad and mom could cook that well, i would have the best feast at my wedding! I loved that the different series weren't just about happy times. I know that there are somethings that were sad as well, I didn't like that it was sad it just related food, to a human relation. I really liked the religion themed segment, i was able to learn about a culture i didn't really know much about. It opened my eyes. I was a little emotional, and felt sad when the last meal segment came up, it a intense moment your last meal, and that guy that prepared them seemed to take his job as if he owed it to them, which i thought was sweet of him. My last meal would be a thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings, because it would remind me of many happy times with my family.
ReplyDeleteChoosing your last meal, it might be one the hardest things to do before you meet your maker. It might be the last pleasure a person can enjoy before they die.
ReplyDeleteI would have a fairly simple meal to make easier for the cook. I'd have big steak, medium done. A pile of mashed potatoes with thick gravy on top. Maybe half a pie on the side, make it a; strawberry rhubarb and a bowl vanilla ice cream next to it. And to wash it all down, I think a couple quarts of at least 2% milk. Anything less than that is just water. I also would require a PENCIL and piece of paper to write a thank you note to the cook that made my meal.
The cool I notice right away with the site, is the Life, Family, and Culture tabs right in the middle of the opening page. Plus, if you click on the Culture tab, you'll find a "Gonna eat that" tab which reminded me of our class blog. Anyway, it’s awesome that they have life, family, and culture as the most important things on the website. There’re also many tools that PBS has put on the site.
The story about the ladies who hand sew together a cook book was just amazing and inspiring to me. I mean to imagine reciting these recipes and writing them down was a way for them to survive is just a miracle. Also, the man who made the last meals was a very honorable man and extremely devoted. He was touching and really cared about these people and their last meal. He always tried to do the absolute best to create their last wishes and that is inspiring.
ReplyDeleteIf I was having a last meal I would have to say I would want my dad's prime rib and my mom's au gratin potatoes. It's really challenging to even imagine a last meal but these are two food items that my parents have always made that just seems uncomparable to anyone else. For dessert I would have my sister make carrot cake with home made frosting.
When I was looking through the Meaning of Food web site I liked searching through the tabs and reading the different articles on different aspects of food such as food and family, food and culture, etc.
For my last meal I think it would be really hard to choose. There are so many good foods out there. At the moment however I think some cheese curds, ice cream with all the good toppings (probably coldstone's ice cream), Chocolate ganashe, Reeses, potato bread from Great Harvest, home made cheese pizza, maccaroni and cheese, pickels, mashed potatoes, a deep fried snickers bar, cotton candy, jones's soda, ice water, and a strawberry banana smoothie. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to eat it all, but would take some bites of everything until i feel sick. I figure if i feel so sick from eating maybe dying wont be so bad. None of the food really has a special meaning for me, just food that I enjoy but usually try to stay away from them for health reasons. I enjoyed searching through the meaning of food website I liked the one about comfort food, and looked through some of the recipies as well.
